A Patch from Scratch!
The Problem
Our clients, nearing retirement, had a new build on an acre of land. There was minimal soil as the property was built on a sand bank, exposed to salty and strong coastal winds. Due to the sandy conditions, the owners wanted to quickly establish a mainly native garden with sweeping lawns as the sand would destroy their new timber floor surface. It also needed to be low maintenance and bush fire retardant. As the garden was so large, the owners opted to be water wise and not put in a watering system, so the entire yard had to survive and thrive on natural rainfall.
Our Solution
After consultation, it was decided that the use of curves throughout the lawn would allow a ride on mower to be used, as well as softening the visual landscape of the property. This was achieved by measuring the turning circle of their ride on mower and planning the lawn, gardens and paths to suit. Research was then undertaken to provide a suitable range of native xeriscape plants which would establish quickly. To deliver a more interesting vista from the house, and encourage investigation and meandering walks through the gardens, mulch paths as well as lawn lead you to discover the next informal garden room.
700 square metres of lawn was laid to suit the agreed upon plan. This incorporated large expanses of lawn for recreation, as well as providing a good buffer in case of fire. It also highlighted and encircled the plantings in some of the garden. The use of small river stones immediately around the house also supplemented the fire buffer zone. Planting succulents instead of natives in close proximity to the house also increased the fire-retardant ability while adding softening greenery to the space.
The owners were very happy with the immediate outcomes achieved and their new timber floor was protected from the gritty sand. The lawns, gardens and mulch gave an instantaneous, established feel to the build and took away the look of a new building site.
Several years on, the garden is growing well due to good planning and plant selection. The owners are thrilled with the outcome and spend many happy hours enjoying their beautiful, low maintenance yard. Many people ask to view the gardens and are in awe that this garden is only a few years old.
Working with the landscape, being realistic in what would work, and being flexible in design and plant choices made this job so much easier. Good planning and communication are always key to achieving a positive result.

So happy with the work done in our garden today. Marcos and Pedro were on time, friendly, professional and meticulous. They brought their giant ladder and climbed up into the clouds to reach the top our overgrown viburnum hedge which they trimmed on our side of the fence and our neighbours. Marcos and Finlay came and worked in our garden all day! We needed general tidying up and mulching and also got some advice on what to do with a tricky spot in our garden down the back. They did a beautiful job, left the place tidy and took away all the garden rubbish. Highly recommend!

Amazing job and very efficient. Our hedges have never looked so perfect. Lucus and his team we so willing to do anything we asked. They are perfectionists. Even to the extent that I was worried about my garden bed being squashed due to all the branches being trimmed so they covered the bed for me. Urban Growth have been our apartment blocks gardener's for a couple of years now. They keep our surrounding garden looking beautiful all year round. I recently contacted Lucas, the manager, requesting an overgrown hedge along my courtyard to be given a severe prune. Today when I arrived home Daniel & Richard, two lovely Brazilian Urban Growth gardeners, were hard at it, pruning as requested.I went out to thank them and they asked me if what they had already done was severe enough? When I requested could they cut it back a little more, they immediately obliged. Not only did they leave my courtyard neat and tidy, clear of any cuttings, they also cleared the weeds from the garden bed so the Mondo grass can regrow.Fabulous work lads!Thanks, Lynette

We saw these guys doing a job at our neighbour’s house and were impressed with their attention to detail, cleaning up, tidiness, all that sort of thing. We asked them to revamp our much-neglected gardens and could not be happier. The workmen were on time, polite and did an excellent job.

Urban growth did a large job on our garden. The work mainly consisted of clearly the undergrowth on the whole of the back part of the block, about 600m2, levelling and replacing with lovely turf. Transformation is an overused word, but it's the right term to use for the work done. Great work and thank you!

Urban Growth provides gardening and maintenance services for my 97-year-old grandfather. When they arrived, the garden was well overgrown and required a lot of attention (far more than you can imagine). Daniel and the team have been super efficient and have done such a great job. Toby and his team only took 1 day to turn a weed-infested, unloved front yard and a multi-level jungle (back yard) into gardens anyone would be proud of. I can't believe how much they accomplished. Great experience! The team did an awesome job. My back garden is on a steep slope and isn’t really usable. After a visit from Urban Growth, I can get to the top of my garden again and they have made it look lovely! I highly recommend.
